At North Myrtle Beach we turned from the shore.

Turning inland for awhile. I enjoy the smooth asphalt.

These campgrounds will put me with the RVs.
My loaded tour bike is an RV.  I carry my bedroom, kitchen and living area.  I level my home as best that I can. I do not need to dump the dirty water and the other. My camping neighbors always show such hospitality.

Wilmington is the eighth most populous city in North Carolina. For many years it was the largest in the state. This is a port city with the Cape Fear River entering into the Atlantic Ocean. I had the chance to visit this city a couple of years ago and enjoyed the historic downtown and the board walk.

When we visited Wilmington we actually stayed on Topsail Island. The photos below are from that trip.

When it looks like rain I look for shelter options.
Picture
We stayed one block off the beach!
Picture
The ocean was refreshing to my feet.
Picture
The walk up to the top of the bridge to the mainland. A great view.

Topsail Island's Three Sisters?

This town is the setting for the Nicholas Sparks' novel The Guardian.

Note that this part of the route uses a ferry.

Very flat, marshy, and windy.

East Coast Greenway Virtual Bike Tour: From Beaufort going north to Charleston, Mc Clellanville, Myrtle Beach

This is near Yemassee and I love stopping at places like this.
We have many cherry orchards near Traverse City,  Michigan. We have a peach festival in Romeo, Michigan. This leads me to believe that they have a similar climate. I feel like I am at home!

On US Highway 21.

City Market in Charleston.
Charleston is a very nice city to visit.  I am a history buff and there is plenty of history from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to keep you interested.  The city market shown above in open daily 9:30-5:30 and stretches 4 city blocks. It is one of the oldest public markets in the US.
Picture
This item at the market caught my eye since it used chain links.
On a  bike tour you do not pick up many souvenirs  to carry with you.  You can always use a shipping service.

I stayed in style in the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston.
Picture
Francis Marion also known as the Swamp Fox.
I remember the Disney series of the Swamp Fox when I was a kid. He lived  1732-1795.  He was known for moving attack tactics that were very different from the organized army maneuvers of the day. We would his describe them a guerrilla warfare.

Near Mt. Pleasant.
Picture
USS Yorktown at Mt. Pleasant.
What a find!  Aircraft carriers are so amazing.  This was originally built in  1943 and continued to be updated and also served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.
Picture
Fishing ships at Mc Clellanville.
In addition to recreation and historical sites to drive the economy, we see the fishing industry is still a part of some communities.  I bet there are some fishing charter boats around here too.

Georgetown is the 3rd oldest town in the state and the 2nd largest sea port.
This area started was good for growing indigo, a color between blue and violet.  I remember ROYGBIV to help me remember the spectrum of colors.  Later the area was good for growing rice.

Stretches of road like this are so pleasant, particularly after some of the heavy trafficked roads I ride.
I wanted to visit Pawleys Island to visit a high school friend.  The island is a barrier island formed by wave and tidal action.  These islands are very common along the Atlantic Coast.

The beach on Pawleys Island.
I have visited Myrtle Beach.  You would enjoy your time here.

Camping on Jekyll Island. No fee to bike onto the island.
Picture
I took some time to do beach cruising on Sapelo Island.
Sapelo Isand  is State managed and you need to ferry over.  This is  the fourth largest barrier island in this stretch.  As you plan your route, take a look of things that you would like to do.
Picture
This area was originally settled with Puritans in 1752. Rice farming was done near here.
Five years ago I took a trip to Savannah and here are some photos from that trip.
Picture
I have never been this close to a peacock.
Picture
The seaport is big business.
Picture
A statue honoring the early days. She is greeting the ships as the arrive.

Picture
I like seeing the green section on the street. I always like a light amount of city traffic.
Picture
These on the country roads mean that I am in the road.
Picture
Warmshowers App allows you to see hosts along your route.  If you are not familiar check out warmshowers.org
This network of hosts for bike travelers will offer a place to stay. You always want to look ahead and be ahead of the game "Where will I stay?"
Picture
Beaufort is a city on Port Royal Island which is a coastal sea island.  From the map of the route above you can see many other islands. Bridge designers love this area following the coastline. There are many 1800 period homes (mansions) to marvel as you travel down the streets.
