 This part covers 500 miles from Midland, S.D. to Minneapolis.  A dinosaur sculpture.  A look at Murdo in 1880.  Town signs are not always this sturdy.  The area looks good for farming, but you see these abandoned homes.  Then I got to the town, or what was left, and empty houses leads to empty businesses.  The grain elevator in Vivian. That is still going strong. You can see these from way off in the distance.  Heavy clouds like this all day.   A wall carving remembering Lewis and Clark at Fort Thompson Recreation Area. The Missouri River is near by..  I am 73% of the way to Minneapolis. Like many towns , camping is allowed in the park.

The weather is getting cooler and I will be moving inside to do my rides. I could feel the cooler air tightening my lungs and it is hard to push it at times. Vista of the Badlands National Park. with sandstone. The hoodoos are rock spires which form at the bottom and the buttes that form at the top. Erosion has been hard at work.  Sand Creek Campground in the National Park. This is not how you want to see your tent after a rain storm.  In the Badlands National Park along the Sage Creek Rim Road.  I had heard of the Wall Drug but did not know any details. This is Wall, S,D. Two million visitors come here a year. Wow!  In Philips, S.D. and this is horse country. Teddy Roosevelt loved riding out here. Now I am moving onto the last section of the trip.  I am moving along but I took some days off over the last two weeks. The days of fall have been great but I know that the good days may disappear at anytime. When the temperatures turned too cold last winter I went inside. I will miss the outside rides, but I can't handle the cold air.    Going from Gillette in Wyoming to Midland in South Dakota.  Keyhole State Park in Wyoming at Bluff Top Campsite.  I call up the website and due to Covid-19 the park camping is still closed. A virtual tour is the best I can do now. I remember the Devil's Tower from the movie Close Encounters and I still want to get there some day. This is in the Black Hills and it is the first National Monument. It is 867' from the base to the top.  Vore Buffalo Jump was used from 1500 to 1900. The area contains the remains of 20,000 bison.  Bridal Veil Falls on the Spearfish Canyon.  From the Black Hills National Forest take a side trip to Deadwood. I loved the HBO series.  George Mickelson Trail #2. I love to ride on trails with this surface. My 32 mm tires work fine.  Sylvan Lake at the base of the Black Hills. The highest point is Black Elk Peak.  Needles Eyes Tunnel: This is one of the six narrow (8' x 13') roadway tunnels in Custer State Park. A great view, but a harrowing ride.  Still in the Custer State Park. The Cathedral Spires. These are eroded granite.  If you are in the vacinity, check out Sturgis. Check on the bike rally dates for accommodations  Hey! There is Mount Rushmore with Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln. They were chosen to represent the birth, growth, development and preservation of the country.  The Black Hills has a lot to explore here.  Keystone, SD. My bike does not quite fit the profile. This town started in 1883 as a mining town for the Keystone mine.  The numbered ovals indicate my daily progress. I seem to be about halfway through this part 2 of the tour.  A field west of Hyattville. Going through some quiet stretches.  Ten Sleep Canyon  Big Horn National Forest west of of Buffalo, WY.  The open road and a good shoulder for when a vehicle is coming from behind. i always give plenty of room for safety.Coming to the largest climb of the route to get to 9675' where it crosses the Big Horn Range.  An irrigated field off the Nowood River.  Big Horn Range.   |
