Down to Escanaba and then along Us 2

Down the Escanaba River to Lake Michigan. Longfellow mentions the Esconaba in the song of Hiawatha.

The rivers get damned up.

This is the third largest city in the UP with over 12,000 residents. We see Lake Michigan from here.

These lakes are big and some of the Great Lakes are the International Border. The Coast Guard is there to serve and protect.

Lighthouses help alert the ships of areas of danger.

Now automatic controls take care of the lights. Many of the remaining lighthouses are open to tour.

This area saw fur trading, lumbering and iron ore economic growth. There is a great harbor for shipping and pleasure craft.

Good shoulder along the road. This is a designated US Bike Route.

I had some time to do some exploring on the side roads.
