Within a mile from home I will be on a dirt road that will lead to miles of smooth unpaved roads. Most roads are straight and are regularly maintained. I can always find a good path. When the grader was recently used there will be a soft surface, but it will flatten with the car traffic. In this photo you can see the soft edge over my right shoulder. I usually do not find much loose gravel. The road is wide enough and the drivers are used to seeing cyclists and move over to be safe. The hills may provide the only blind spots. This photo from early April before the trees had leaves, but early work in the field had begun. My turnaround point was Zion Lutheran Church. This area was developed by farmers from Germany. This church building is dated 1867. My shade tree did not make it through the winter, but I still enjoyed the steps to rest. I have a wide enough gear range to make it up the hill on this route. I have found some that I need to walk. Today I climbed close to 900 feet. Due to the open areas, you can expect a breeze. Today I fought an 18 mph headwind from the southeast going out and I enjoyed the tailwind on the way home.
